International Coastal Clean-up 2011
It is my pleasure writing that this year we are celebrating International Coastal Clean up from 15th August to 17th September 2011. I welcome you as State Coordinator for Gujarat to associate with us in this year’s International Coastal Clean up campaign & support this noble cause.
About us:
Over the last 25 years Ocean Conservancy a US based NGO, organizes Coastal Cleanup with NGO’s world wide. Founded in 1972, OC is an environmental non-profit advocacy organization that promotes healthy and diverse ocean ecosystems and opposes practices that threaten ocean life and human life.
In India, Indian Maritime Foundation (IMF) acts as National Coordinator for Ocean Conservancy.
IMF is a non profit organisation, registered in Pune as a charitable trust. It has branches in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. It was established by n December 1993 by a group of officers who have served in the Indian Navy, the Indian Merchant Marine and other professions. They have dedication and a high sense of commitment to this cause of public service they have embarked upon.
Jeevan Jyot Kendra is a non-governmental organization, registered as a public charitable trust (E-751) with the Charity Commissioner, Junagadh in October 1982. The main aim of Jeevan Jyot Kendra is to contribute to build urban & rural India where all people can gain access to education, health care & livelihood opportunities & where all Indians can realize their full potential.
About International Coastal Cleanup:
An Ocean is critically important to every one of us. It creates countless jobs & fuels prosperity; it provides us with food to eat, water to drink, & oxygen to breathe; & it regulates our climate. Whether we live on a beach or far from the coastline, we all have a profound stake in an ocean that is healthy & abundant. Yet we are trashing our planet’s life-support system. Year after year, the glut of items polluting our seas extends to the most remote corners of the globe, choking economies, killing wildlife, & impacting communities & human health.
Each year, thousands of whales, dolphins, seals, & sea turtles die as "by catch" — animals accidentally injured or killed in fishing operations. When people see photographs of animals like endangered sea turtles or whales eating or entangled in debris, they demand action. Speeding ships in some of the busiest marine highways also pose a huge threat to endangered whales. On top of this, pollution & trash are poisoning & choking animals along our coastlines.
Ocean ecosystems play a vital role in all living things — on land & underwater. Hence our mission is to protect sea animals from careless human behaviour simultaneously keeping the river streams clean & creating & awareness among citizens.
Jeevan Jyot Kendra, will find suitable volunteers to help target appropriate sites for conducting clean ups. We will help in organizing the clean-up & find local sponsors to support the event.
Previous year more then 500,000 volunteers participated from more then 100 countries.
In India 34, 726 volunteers participated cleaning 318 km collecting 83060 kg of debris.
At Jeevan Jyot Kendra 170 volunteers participated, cleaning 7km & collecting 390 kg of debris.
This year we plan to do a mega cleanup with more than 2000 volunteer’s at15 locations.
We will organize training on cleanup and provide with resources such as documentaries, data cards and other cleanup resources. We look forward for your support in creating a better world, a better place to live.
